Reading Red Flags We All Ignore 🚩📚

Reading Red Flags We All Ignore 🚩📚

We see the red flags, we acknowledge the red flags, and then we read the book anyway! Here are all the warning signs readers ignore because we're book addicts and we can't help ourselves!

🚨 DISCLAIMER: We're about to call ourselves out HARD. 🚨

Look, we KNOW we're ignoring red flags. We SEE them. We ACKNOWLEDGE them. We make JOKES about them.

And then we read the book anyway. 📖😅

Because we're readers, and apparently we have ZERO self-preservation instincts when it comes to books! Every single one of these red flags is SCREAMING "danger ahead!" and we're like "yeah but what if it's different THIS time?"

Spoiler alert: It's never different. 💀

But do we learn? NOPE! So let's laugh at ourselves together as we count down all the red flags we see, ignore, and then complain about later! 🎭✨

🚩 Red Flag #1: "Book 1 of 7" 📚📚📚📚📚📚📚

The Warning Sign: That innocent "Book 1" on the cover, with tiny text underneath revealing there are SIX MORE BOOKS.

What We Tell Ourselves: "I'll just read the first one and see how I feel!" 😊

The Reality: You're about to sign a blood oath for approximately 4,000 pages and the next 6 months of your life. There is no escape. The series has you now. 🫠

Why We Ignore It: Because Book 1 looks SO GOOD and we're SURE we can just read one and be satisfied!

The Truth: We're finishing this series even if it kills us. Even if the quality drops in Book 4. Even if we hate the love interest by Book 5. We're IN TOO DEEP NOW. 📚⛓️

Bonus Red Flag: When you realize the series ISN'T EVEN FINISHED YET! 💀 Now you're waiting YEARS for the next book! But do we learn?? 🤡

🚩 Red Flag #2: "Everyone's Talking About This Book" 📢

When BookTok, Bookstagram, Goodreads, AND your friend group won't shut up about a book. 🗣️🗣️🗣️

What We Tell Ourselves: "If EVERYONE loves it, it MUST be good!" ✨

Overhyped books hit different (and not always in a good way). The expectations are SO HIGH that even a great book feels disappointing. 😐

Why We Ignore It: FOMO is REAL, baby! What if it actually IS that good and we miss out?? What if everyone's discussing it and we can't participate?? THE HORROR! 😱

But we read it anyway because we can't be the only one who HASN'T read it! Peer pressure works, even for books!

🚩 Red Flag #3: The Series Isn't Finished 📅⏰

The Warning Sign: "Book 1 of 3" but only Book 1 is currently published. 📖❓❓

What We Tell Ourselves: "I'll just wait for all of them to come out before I start!" 🙃

yeah.... no.

The Reality: WE'RE STARTING IT TONIGHT. 🤡

Why We Ignore It: Because it's HERE! It's AVAILABLE! We want to read it NOW! Future us can deal with the consequences!

The Consequences:

  • Finishing Book 1 at 2 AM 😴
  • MAJOR cliffhanger 😱
  • Checking when Book 2 comes out 📅
  • "18 months from now" 💀
  • Spiraling into despair 🌀
  • "WHY DID I DO THIS TO MYSELF" 😭
  • Doing it again with the next series anyway 🔄

The Truth: We have ZERO impulse control. The "wait for all books" strategy is a beautiful dream we will never achieve. 📚💔

🚩 Red Flag #4: Love Triangle Warning ⚠️💕🔺

The Warning Sign: The synopsis mentions TWO potential love interests. You KNOW what this means. 🙄

What We Tell Ourselves: "Maybe it'll be a GOOD love triangle this time! Maybe it's done well!" 🤞

The Reality: It's the same love triangle you've read 47 times. She'll be wishy-washy for 3 books. You'll pick a team. Your team will lose. You'll be mad. 😤

Why We Ignore It: Because MAYBE this time the author will surprise us! Maybe THIS love triangle will be different! Maybe— 🤡

The Cycle Continues! We KNOW love triangles stress us out! We KNOW we'll pick the "wrong" team! DO WE CARE?? Apparently not! We're gluttons for romantic punishment! 💕

🚩 Red Flag #5: The Author's Track Record 📊

The Warning Sign: This author has NEVER given you a happy ending. Not once. In their entire bibliography. 😐

What We Tell Ourselves: "Maybe THIS book will be different! Character growth! Author evolution!" 🤞

The Reality: If an author has killed the main character in 5 books, they're killing the main character in Book 6 too, bestie. 💀

Why We Ignore It: HOPE! Delusion! Optimism! The belief that THIS TIME will be different! 🌈🤡

The Pattern:

  • Author's Book 1: Sad ending 😢
  • You: "Wow, that was unexpected!"
  • Author's Book 2: Sad ending 😢
  • You: "Okay, twice is a coincidence..."
  • Author's Book 3: Sad ending 😢
  • You: "This is a pattern but SURELY—"
  • Author's Book 4: Sad ending 😢
  • You: "Maybe they're just having a phase?"
  • Author's NEW Book: exists
  • You: "THIS ONE WILL BE DIFFERENT!" 🤡
  • Same sad ending 😢
  • You: shocked Pikachu face 😦

THE DEFINITION OF INSANITY is reading the same author expecting different results! BUT WE DO IT ANYWAY! 📚🔄

🚩 Red Flag #6: Cliffhanger Endings ⛰️😱

The Warning Sign: Reviews mention "major cliffhanger" or "NOT a standalone!" ⚠️

What We Tell Ourselves: "I can wait for Book 2! I have patience!" 😌

The Reality: You're finishing Book 1 at midnight, IMMEDIATELY checking when Book 2 releases, discovering it's 8 months away, and entering the five stages of grief. 😭

Why We Ignore It: Because the book sounds SO GOOD and we're SURE we can handle one little cliffhanger! 🤡

The Cliffhanger Experience:

  • Reading along, enjoying the story 😊
  • Getting invested in the plot 📖
  • "Wow this is so good!" ✨
  • Approaching the end 📄
  • "Wait, this can't be resolved in 20 pages—" 🤔
  • "Wait—" 😰
  • "WAIT—" 😨
  • MASSIVE CLIFFHANGER ⛰️
  • "NO!" 😱
  • "THAT'S IT??" 😤
  • "WHEN'S BOOK 2??" ⏰
  • "NOT FOR ANOTHER YEAR??" 💀
  • Existential crisis 🌀

THE BETRAYAL! We KNEW this would happen! Reviews TOLD US! But did we listen?? NOPE! And now we're suffering! 😭📚

Why Do We Do This To Ourselves?? 🤔💭

The Real Talk: We see EVERY SINGLE red flag. We're not oblivious. We KNOW what we're getting into. 🚩👀

So why do we ignore them??

Hope! Maybe THIS time it'll be different! (It won't)

Optimism! Maybe we can handle it! (We can't)

FOMO! Everyone's reading it! (So what?)

Curiosity! We need to know what happens! (At what cost?)

Addiction! We're book junkies! (This is accurate)

Love for books! Even bad decisions lead to good stories! (Also accurate!)

THE TRUTH: We're readers. This is what we DO. We ignore red flags, make questionable book choices, stay up too late, get emotionally destroyed, and DO IT ALL AGAIN because we LOVE it! 📚💕

We wouldn't have it any other way! 🎭✨

Even when we're crying at 2 AM over a character death we were warned about, or waiting 2 years for a sequel, or hate-reading Book 6 of a series we stopped enjoying at Book 3... we're LIVING! 🌟

Books are chaos, we are chaos, and we're thriving in our questionable decisions! 🔥📖

The Red Flags We'll Continue To Ignore 🚩✅

Let's be honest - we're not changing. 😂

Next time we see "Book 1 of 8"? We're reading it. ✅

Next time everyone hypes a book? We're reading it. ✅

Next time there's a love triangle? We're reading it. ✅

Next time an author warns us we'll cry? We're reading it. ✅

Next time we say "just one chapter"? We're lying to ourselves but reading anyway. ✅

BECAUSE WE'RE READERS AND THIS IS WHAT WE DO! 📚🎉

The red flags are part of the journey! The questionable decisions are part of the experience! The staying up until 3 AM and regretting it is part of the lifestyle! 🌙

We're not ignoring red flags because we're naive.

We're ignoring them because we're PASSIONATE! 🔥

And honestly? Some of the best reading experiences come from ignoring the warnings and diving in headfirst! Sometimes the red flags lead to red roses! 🌹 (Sometimes they lead to emotional devastation but that's fine too!) 😅

So here's to ignoring red flags, making chaotic reading choices, and living our best bookish lives! 🥂📖

May we continue to make terrible decisions that lead to great stories! 🎭✨

Tag a reader friend who ignores every single one of these red flags! (It's probably all of us!) 👥📚
