Book Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi (Book 1 of Shatter Me series)
by The Book Pup on April 22, 2026
Blurb for the book (on Goodreads):
The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal. As long as she doesn't hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don't fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war—and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she's exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.
My Summary:
The Reestablishment wants to use Juliette as a weapon. Adam wants to protect her. And Warner, the cold commander of Sector 45, has plans for her that she can't even begin to understand.
As Juliette discovers more about her power and the dystopian world crumbling around her, she must decide who to trust and what kind of person she wants to be.
My Review
This book started out as a SOLID 5 stars for me! 🌟 The beginning absolutely HOOKED me. The writing style is so unique and poetic—the crossed-out words showing Juliette's racing thoughts, the fragmented sentences, the raw emotion. It's beautiful and haunting anddefinitly stood out from your typical past-time read. 💭✨
The concept is fascinating! A girl whose touch is deadly, locked away by an authoritarian regime, discovering she might be more than just a victim of her own power? Yes, please! The dystopian setting is well-developed, and you keep wondering how the author will solve the problems in the book. 🌍
BUT—the ending was good and intriguing! 🎯 The final act has action, revelations, and setup for what's clearly going to be a very interesting book 2. The conclusion left me wanting more, which is exactly what a first book in a series should do! ✨
At this point in the series, I'm sure EVERYONE loved Adam at the beginning (unless you're one of those people who searched spoilers about who Juliette ends up with, and honestly, respect for your self-control). Adam is sweet, protective, kind, and has history with Juliette. He's the obvious choice, the safe choice, the one who seems to genuinely care about her. 💚
Because Warner is a JERK here. 😤 Like, a genuine, certified, no-question-about-it JERK. He's cruel, manipulative, controlling, and absolutely terrifying. The things he does and says to Juliette are NOT okay. I spent most of this book being like "why is BookTok obsessed with this guy?! He's AWFUL!" (before you argue that he gets a redemption arc, yada yada yada, he doesn't become good in this book).
The world-building is solid for a YA dystopian. We get enough information about The Reestablishment and the state of the world without being info-dumped to death. The power system is intriguing, and I'm curious to learn more about it in future books. 🌟
The supporting characters are interesting enough, though some feel a bit underdeveloped in this first installment. I'm hoping we get more depth in the sequels. 🎭
Despite the repetitive middle section, I genuinely enjoyed this book! It's easy to see why BookTok loves it—the writing is distinctive, the romance is intense, the powers are cool, and there's enough intrigue to keep you hooked. Is it perfect? No. But is it entertaining and worth reading? Absolutely!
4/5 pawprints 🐾🐾🐾🐾

Who I think this book is for: BookTok enthusiasts (obviously!), readers who love unique/poetic writing styles, fans of dystopian YA with romance, anyone who enjoys power-based stories, and people who don't mind love triangles (because this one is CENTRAL).
Cheers, and happy reading!

P.S. Team Adam for now, but I'm keeping an open mind for the sequel. Let's see if Warner can redeem himself (I will consider converting if he becomes less possessive and jerk-y).
P.P.S. That writing style though—love it! ✍️✨
