Book Review: The Prisoner's Throne by Holly Black (Book 2 of The Stolen Heir duology)
by The Book Pup on June 24, 2026
Blurb for the book (on Goodreads):
Prince Oak is paying for his betrayal. Imprisoned in the icy north and bound to the will of a monstrous new queen, he must rely on charm and calculation to survive. With High King Cardan and High Queen Jude willing to use any means necessary to retrieve their stolen heir, Oak will have to decide whether to attempt regaining the trust of the girl he’s always loved or to remain loyal to Elfhame and hand over the means to end her reign—even if it means ending Wren, too.
With a new war looming on the horizon and treachery lurking in every corner, neither Oak’s guile nor his wit will be enough to keep everyone he loves alive. It’s just a question of whom he will doom.
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black comes the stunning blood-soaked conclusion to the Stolen Heir duology.
My Review
After reading The Cruel Prince trilogy (which is absolutely LEGENDARY 👑✨), I went into The Prisoner's Throne with pretty low expectations, if I'm being honest. 🐾🌙 I figured there was no way a spin-off could match the magic of Jude and Cardan's story, right?
This book turned out to be way more entertaining than I expected! Holly Black still has that magic touch when it comes to writing Elfhame—the dangerous politics, the beautiful cruelty, the swoon-worthy moments mixed with genuine peril. She didn't lose her touch! 🌲⚔️
Mini confession time: 😅🙈 I didn't know you were supposed to read The Stolen Heir (book 1 of this duology) FIRST until it was too late and I'd already started this one. Oops! 🐸📚
Was I confused? A little! Did I have to Google some stuff to understand the context of what was happening and who certain characters were? Absolutely! 🦉🔍 But honestly? I was fine! The story still worked for me even coming in at book 2, though I definitely recommend doing it the RIGHT way and reading book 1 first if you can. Learn from my mistake! 😂🌿
Despite my backwards reading order, this was a fun read for sure! 🐱💕 Black knows how to keep you entertained with political scheming, dangerous magic, complicated relationships, and that signature Elfhame atmosphere that's equal parts beautiful and deadly. 🌹🗡️
Suren is fascinating and complicated. 🐺❄️ Her journey and her relationship with Oak creates good tension and emotional depth. Their dynamic is interesting—different from Jude and Cardan's enemies-to-lovers, but compelling in its own way. 💫🖤
The politics of the Court of Teeth and the various fae courts continue to be deliciously complicated. 🏰🌙 Black excels at creating these layered political situations where everyone has their own agenda and trust is a luxury no one can afford. 🦊🎭
The pacing is solid—things keep moving, revelations keep coming, and I never felt bored. 🐾💨 There's always something happening, whether it's political maneuvering, magical danger, or character development. The balance works well! 🌲⚡
Now, why 3.5 stars instead of higher? 🐱🤔 While this was definitely entertaining and fun, it doesn't quite reach the heights of The Cruel Prince trilogy. That's not necessarily a fair comparison (those books are ICONIC 👑💕), but it's inevitable when you're writing in the same world. This is good, but the original trilogy is GREAT, you know? 🌟📚
Also, coming in at book 2 probably affected my experience somewhat. 😅🦉 Even though I managed okay, I'm sure I missed nuances and character development from book 1 that would have made this even more impactful. That's on me though! 🙈🌙
The stakes don't feel quite as personal or as high as they did in Jude's story. 🗡️💔 That's partly because we already know how some things turn out (since this is technically a prequel/spin-off to events we know happened), which removes some tension. But Black does her best to create uncertainty within those constraints! 🌲⚔️
If you loved the original trilogy and want more Elfhame content, definitely pick this up! Just, you know, read book 1 first unlike someone we know (me 😅🌿). 📚🦋
3/5 pawprints 🐾🐾🐾
You can find the book on Goodreads here!
Who I think this book is for: Fans of The Cruel Prince who want more Elfhame adventures 🏰✨, readers who love fae politics and danger 🦊🗡️, people who enjoyed Oak's character in the original trilogy 🦌💚, and anyone who can't get enough of Holly Black's dark, beautiful writing 🥀🌙
IMPORTANT reading order note: Read The Stolen Heir FIRST! 📚🦉 Don't be like me and come in confused! Though honestly, if you accidentally do what I did, you'll probably survive. Just have Google ready! 😂🔍
Cheers, and happy reading! 🐱💕🌿

P.S. Holly Black, thank you for giving us more Elfhame content! Even spin-offs are better than no new fae stories! 🦋✨🏰
P.P.S. Now I guess I should go back and actually read The Stolen Heir to see what I missed... 😅🦊📚
