What My DNF List Taught Me About Myself

What My DNF List Taught Me About Myself

by The Book Pup

Let’s be honest: the DNF list (Did Not Finish) is a place of mystery, chaos, heartbreak… and personal growth.

Some people hide it.
Some people fear it.
Some people pretend they finish everything (liars).

But me?
I have embraced the DNF list like the chaotic, honest best friend it secretly is. And honestly? It has taught me so much about my reading habits, my tastes, my mood, and even my personality.

Here’s everything I’ve learned from the books I abandoned along the way, and why your DNF shelf might be saying more about you than you think 👀✨

1. I Am Way More Mood-Driven Than I Thought

I used to think I could read any book at any time.

HAHAHA. No.

If I try reading a slow fantasy when I want a cute romance? Immediate DNF.
If I’m craving a mystery and accidentally pick up a contemporary? Goodbye book.

My DNF list showed me that forcing myself to read “what I think I should read” instead of what I want to read always ends in disaster.

Lesson: Your mood matters. Let it pick your next book, trust the vibes.

2. Aesthetically Pretty Covers Do Not Guarantee I Love the Inside

Some books… look SO good on Instagram. SO good.
The sprayed edges? The foiling? The color-coded spine?
*immediately picks it up*

And then I opened the book.
…and closed it again.

Lesson: I am weak for a pretty cover, but not so weak that I’ll suffer through 500 pages of boredom just for the vibes.

3. I Do Not Have the Patience for Info-Dumps

If the first chapter feels like a textbook and not a story... bye.
I have things to do. Cookies to eat. Possibly other books to read.

If I have to read 40 pages before the plot starts breathing, I’m out.

Lesson: I like stories that pull me in, not ones that require a survival guide.

4. I Actually Prefer Fast-Paced Books (even if I deny it)

I used to proudly say, “I love slow burns.”
…But my DNF list was full of slow burns.

Lesson: I enjoy slow moments inside a book, but not slow beginnings.
I want to care quickly. I want to be invested early.
Give me stakes, banter, mystery, SOMETHING.

5. Life Is Too Short to Read Books I’m Not Enjoying

This is the biggest one.
I used to FORCE myself to continue books I disliked because it felt wrong to quit.

But once you start DNF-ing?
You never go back.
It is liberation. It is rebirth. It is peace.

Lesson: If I’m not excited to pick it up, I don’t.

6. I’ve Learned Exactly What I Love

My DNF list helped me identify my TRUTHS:

✨ I love strong character voices
✨ I love witty banter
✨ I love short chapters
✨ I love action or romance early on

And once I knew what wasn’t working… I became better at choosing what does.

Lesson: The DNF list is basically a personality quiz. “You abandoned this book, here’s what that says about your taste.” 😌

7. My Reading Life Feels Lighter and Happier

Since letting myself DNF freely:
✔ I read more

✔ I enjoy reading more
✔ I feel less guilty
✔ I discover more books I love

#DNFLove

Final Thoughts: Don’t Fear the DNF

Your DNF list isn’t a graveyard.
It’s a mirror.
It shows you your reading patterns, your tastes, your moods, and your boundaries.

And honestly? I think knowing why you stop reading a book is just as valuable as knowing why you love one.

So next time you DNF something, don’t feel bad.
Feel self-aware.
Feel powerful.
Feel unapologetically bookish.

Because your DNF list might just be your most honest reading diary 📚💛

Happy reading!
