Book Review: Unraveled by Shannon Messenger (Book 9.5 of Keeper of the Lost Cities)

Blurb for the book (on Goodreads):
This can’t-miss installment of the series is told entirely from Keefe’s POV and contains crucial clues about truths buried deep in the elvin world.
My Review
As a longtime KOTLC fan, I was excited to dive into Unraveled, but I have to be honest, his one was a bit of a mixed bag for me. 📚
Let me start with what I absolutely LOVED: getting that scene (chapter 42) from Keefe's POV! 😍 I was NOT expecting Messenger to include this, and it was everything I didn't know I needed.
Another highlight was Alvar's redemption arc. Seeing him turn good and actually become a main character was surprising and genuinely interesting. 👏 Messenger did a solid job of making his transformation feel earned rather than sudden, and I appreciated getting more depth to a character who was previously pretty one-dimensional as a villain, especially because it didn't make sense why Alvar turned evil in the first place.
Now for the not-so-great parts: this book had A LOT of filler chapters. Like, a concerning amount. 😅 There were entire sections where I found myself skimming because nothing significant was happening. For a companion book that's supposed to enhance the main series, too much of it felt like padding rather than meaningful content.
If you're a die-hard KOTLC fan who needs every scrap of content from this world, you'll probably enjoy it despite the slower moments. But if you're a more casual reader of the series, you could probably skip this and not miss much (except that Keefe POV chapter—seriously, that one's gold ✨).
You can find the book on Goodreads here!
Who I think this book is for: Devoted KOTLC fans who want deeper character perspectives and are okay with slower pacing, readers who need that Keefe POV scene in their lives, and anyone curious about Alvar's redemption.
Reading order note: This is book 9.5, so you DEFINITELY need to read the main series first! This won't make any sense as a standalone.
Cheers, and happy reading!
