My Unofficially Unpopular Reading Opinions (Please Don’t Throw Tomatoes ๐Ÿ…)

My Unofficially Unpopular Reading Opinions (Please Don’t Throw Tomatoes ๐Ÿ…)

by The Book Pup on February 18, 2026

Okay besties… it’s time. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Time to get controversial in the bookish corner of the internet.

We ALL have those spicy reading opinions we hide from the group chat. ๐Ÿ‘€
The books everyone else worships but you hated.
The reading habits your friends side-eye.
The hot takes that would get you gently escorted out of certain book spaces.

Well… today I’m sharing ALL of mine.

(This is my new year's gift to y'all.)
Yes. All the chaos. All the drama. All the opinions that make people go ๐Ÿ‘️๐Ÿ‘„๐Ÿ‘️.

Some of these you’ll agree with.
Some will make you want to fight me in the comments (pls don’t).
Either way, let’s have fun, be honest, and not take reading too seriously. ๐Ÿ’›

Ground Rules (a.k.a. Please Don’t Cancel Me ๐Ÿ˜‡)

  • These are MY opinions based on MY weird reading brain
  • Your different opinion is also ✨beautiful✨
  • No book shaming (I’m looking at you, “If you don’t read classics you’re not a real reader” people)
  • Be kind, be funny, and bring snacks

Ready? Deep breaths. Let’s go. ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ‘‡

1. Most “Classic” YA Books Haven’t Aged Well ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

The take: Books from the 90s and early 2000s are… kinda crusty now.
The nostalgia is cute, but the writing? The tropes? Some of the messaging? ๐Ÿ˜ต‍๐Ÿ’ซ

The bar has RISEN, people. YA today? Peak fiction. Peak vibes. Peak everything.

2. Reading Diverse Books Shouldn’t Feel Like Homework ๐Ÿ“š✊

Representation = important
Reading books you actually enjoy = ALSO IMPORTANT

If a book is diverse but boring, you’re allowed to DNF.
You’re not a villain. You’re just protecting your sanity. ๐Ÿ’…

3. Audiobooks vs Physical Books = Different Vibes ๐ŸŽง๐Ÿ“–

Audiobooks = reading ✔️
BUT ALSO: different experience ✔️

It’s okay to prefer one.
It’s okay to switch back and forth.
It’s okay to marry your audiobook narrator. (Kidding… unless?) ๐Ÿ™ˆ

4. Book Series Should Be SHORTER ๐Ÿ˜ญ

95% of long series could’ve been a duology.
Or a trilogy MAX.
Book four is always just the characters walking around accomplishing nothing except trauma bonding.

5. You Can Judge a Book by Its Cover (A Little) ๐ŸŽจ

Look… publishers spend a LOT of time trying to tell you what a book is with the cover.

If a cover looks like a bright pink cupcake but the book is a psychological thriller?
Someone messed up. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

6. “Slow Burn” Often Means “Nothing Happens for 200 Pages” ๐Ÿ”ฅ➡️๐Ÿ’ค

GOOD slow burn = tension, chemistry, longing, ✨vibes✨
BAD slow burn = two people staring politely at each other until page 350

Sorry not sorry.

7. Writing Quality Matters (Even in Fun Books) ✍️⭐

I can love a book AND admit the writing felt like it went through Google Translate three times.

Fun + well written > fun + chaotic prose

8. You Don’t Have to Read Outside Your Comfort Zone ๐Ÿ˜Œ

If you only want to read fantasy, read fantasy.
If you only want to read romance, read romance.
If you only want to read books with dragons… iconic. ๐Ÿ‰

Reading = joy, not homework.

9. Rereading Is Overrated (Don’t Attack Me) ๐Ÿ˜ญ

I love comfort reads, but personally?
Every reread feels like a missed opportunity to find a new fave.

Exception: rereading right before a sequel drops. That’s self-care.

10. “Complex” Doesn’t Always Mean “Better” ๐Ÿง ➡️๐Ÿ˜ต

If your book has 12 POVs, 4 timelines, and a prophecy written backwards in ancient runes…
I might tap out. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Sometimes a simple, well-told story hits harder than a literary puzzle box.

11. Most Love Triangles Are… Bad ❤️๐Ÿ’”❤️‍๐Ÿฉน

Not the concept.
THE EXECUTION.

A good love triangle is rare.
A bad one is… every third YA book ever written.

12. Five-Star Ratings Are Given Out WAY Too Easily ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐๐Ÿ’€

If half your books are 5 stars… bestie, that’s not a rating system. That’s enthusiasm.
Four stars is NOT an insult!! It literally means “amazing but not life-changing.” ๐Ÿ˜ญ

13. Sometimes the Hype Is Actually Right ๐Ÿคท‍♀️✨

Powerless? Great.
The Cruel Prince? ICONIC.

Percy Jackson? Peak childhood.

Popular books can be popular because they're… good.
Contrarianism isn’t a personality trait. ๐Ÿ˜Œ

14. Authors Can Write Outside Their Experience (With Research) ✍️๐ŸŒ

As long as they put in the work, listen to sensitivity readers, and write responsibly?
Yes. Please. More variety. More stories. More everything.

15. It’s Okay to DNF Books You Hate ๐Ÿ˜

DNF at page 10
DNF at page 1
DNF during the prologue
I support all forms of emotional self-defense.

Life’s too short and TBRs are too long.

Your Turn! Drop YOUR Unpopular Reading Opinion ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ”ฅ

Be respectful. Be funny. Be honest.
The spicier the take, the more popcorn I bring. ๐Ÿฟ

Reading is personal, messy, subjective, and magical, so don’t be scared to say what you really think. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ“š

Luv y'all and see you soon!
