Book Review: The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black (Book 3 of The Cruel Prince series)

My Summary:

Jude Duarte has been exiled from Faerie by the very king she put on the throne—Cardan, the boy she hates, the boy she married, the boy she might actually love. Stuck in the mortal world and stripped of her power, Jude is lost.

But when an opportunity arises to return to Faerie, she seizes it without hesitation. What she finds is a kingdom in chaos, a curse threatening everything she's fought for, and Cardan in desperate need of saving—whether he wants her help or not.

To reclaim her throne and save Faerie, Jude must confront her complicated feelings for Cardan, outwit her enemies, and prove once and for all that she belongs in the world she's fought so hard to claim.

Perfect for readers who've been on this journey from the beginning and need the epic, satisfying conclusion they deserve.

My Review

HOLLY BLACK DELIVERED THE PERFECT ENDING AND I'M STILL NOT OVER IT. 🔥👑

The Queen of Nothing is everything a series finale should be and MORE. After the devastating ending of The Wicked King, I went into this with impossibly high expectations, and somehow Black exceeded every single one. This book is absolutely phenomenal. 💫

Let's start with the pacing: FLAWLESS. There is always something happening, always a new twist, always a revelation that makes you gasp. Holly Black doesn't waste a single page—every chapter moves the plot forward, deepens character relationships, or reveals something crucial. I was engaged from the very first page to the very last. 📚✨

Jude's character arc in this book is chef's kiss perfection. She maintains that fierce, strategic, ruthless personality we fell in love with in book one, but now we see even more layers. What I absolutely LOVED is that Holly doesn't make Jude suddenly perfect—she still makes mistakes, still has flaws, still acts impulsively sometimes. And you know what? That makes her even STRONGER as a character. Her flaws are what make her real, relatable, and ultimately more compelling. 💪

The way Jude's leadership qualities shine through in this book is incredible. She's not just surviving anymore—she's strategizing, leading, making impossible choices, and proving over and over that she BELONGS on that throne. Watching her reclaim her power and her place in Faerie was so satisfying. 👑

Now let's talk about Cardan and Jude because OH MY GOODNESS. 😍 The evolution of their relationship from book one (where they genuinely hated each other) to this book is absolutely PERFECT. Black took her time developing their feelings, making us believe in their connection, and by this book, their love for each other feels completely earned and genuine. The way they challenge each other, protect each other, and ultimately choose each other despite everything? PEAK ROMANCE. 🥰

Cardan's character development throughout the series has been stunning, and this book gives us the culmination of that growth. He's still wickedly charming and complicated, but we finally see the full depth of his feelings and his capacity for change. The scenes between him and Jude are electric, emotional, and everything I didn't know I needed. 💕

The political intrigue remains top-tier. The scheming, the betrayals, the alliances—it all comes together beautifully. Black weaves together plot threads from all three books and resolves them in ways that feel both surprising and inevitable.

And that ENDING. 🎉 It's happy! It's satisfying! ALL the loose ends are tied up! Holly gives us the conclusion we deserved without sacrificing the complexity and darkness that makes this series so good. Jude gets her throne, her power, and her king—and it feels completely earned after everything she's been through.

The action sequences are incredible, the emotional beats hit perfectly, and the dialogue is sharp and witty as always. Black's writing is at its absolute best in this finale. Every scene feels purposeful, every character moment lands, and the whole book just WORKS. ✨

This is hands down one of the best series finales I've ever read. It honored the characters, delivered on the promises set up in earlier books, and gave us an ending that was both happy and true to the dark, complex world Black created. 📖💫

Who I think this book is for: Anyone who's read the first two books (seriously, if you haven't finished this series yet, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?), fans of morally gray characters, enemies-to-lovers done RIGHT, political fantasy, and satisfying series conclusions.

Reading order reminder: This is book 3—definitely read The Cruel Prince and The Wicked King first! (You can find my reviews for [The Cruel Prince here!] and [The Wicked King here!])

Cheers, and happy reading!
