Book Review: Fearless by Lauren Roberts (Book 3 of The Powerless series)
by The Book Pup on February 6, 2026
Blurb for the book (on Goodreads):
Ordinary-born Paedyn Gray was prepared for a death sentence, not a proposal. After killing the king, marriage to his son, Kitt, was the last thing she—or the kingdom—expected. But with her role as queen, Paedyn would have the chance to unite Ilya and create a kingdom where Ordinaries live alongside Elites without fear.
With a decision looming, Paedyn battles between her head, her heart, and the hidden trials she now faces. Through it all, Kai Azer fights to call her his, even if it means defying his king. Are vows strong enough to unite a kingdom? Or will betrayal break them? The choice between sacrifice and self has never been more difficult . . . or deadly.
My Review
Let me start with the positives: the action and intensity are still there, and Roberts continues to deliver on the high-stakes fantasy that made the first two books so engaging. There are some genuinely exciting moments, and the world-building remains strong. The overall story arc comes to a close, which I appreciated after that brutal cliffhanger from Reckless. ✨
The ending is happy, which I was grateful for after all the angst and pain throughout the series! 🎉 Paedyn and Kai get their moment, and there's resolution to the main conflict. After everything they've been through, they deserved a win.
However, there were some significant issues that brought this down to 3 stars for me. 😕
WARNING ⚠️: Spoilers coming ahead.
My biggest frustration: what happened to Kitt. 💔 He basically became a monster, and watching that transformation was really disappointing. This is a character we've known throughout the series, and seeing him turn into something so dark without enough justification felt wrong. Then the way he died? Not good at all. His death didn't feel meaningful or well-executed—it just kind of... happened. It felt rushed and unsatisfying, like it was more about checking off a plot point than giving his character a proper conclusion. 😤
The ending, while happy, had some noticeable plot holes. Things that should have been explained weren't, character decisions that needed more justification felt sudden, and some resolutions seemed too convenient given everything that came before. It felt like pieces were missing from the puzzle, leaving gaps in the overall story.
If you've read the first two books, you'll probably want to finish the series for closure. Just be prepared for some frustration and maybe lower your expectations a bit. The happy ending is worth something, but the journey to get there has some bumps. 💫
You can find the book on Goodreads here!
Who I think this book is for: Fans of the Powerless series who need closure, readers who prioritize happy endings over perfect execution, and anyone invested in Paedyn and Kai's story enough to see it through.
Reading order reminder: This is book 3—you absolutely need to read Powerless and Reckless first!

P.S. Still processing what they did to Kitt. That deserved better. 😤💔
