Book Review: Reckless by Lauren Roberts (Book 2 of Powerless)

Blurb for the book (on Goodreads):

Paedyn and Kai battle with duty and desire in this highly anticipated second installment in the sizzling and epic romantic fantasy trilogy that’s packed with spicy tension and edge-of-your-seat betrayal.

The kingdom of Ilya is in turmoil…

After surviving the Purging Trials, Ordinary-born Paedyn Gray has killed the King and kickstarted a Resistance throughout the land. Now she’s running from the one person she had wanted to run to.

Kai Azer is now Ilya’s Enforcer, loyal to his brother Kitt, the new King. He has vowed to find Paedyn and bring her to justice.

Across the deadly Scorches, and deep into the hostile city of Dor, Kai pursues the one person he wishes he didn’t have to. But in a city without Elites, the balance between the hunter and hunted shifts—and the battle between duty and desire is deadly.

My Summary:

After the explosive events of Powerless, Paedyn and Kai are navigating an even more dangerous landscape. The kingdom of Ilya is fracturing, war is brewing, and their forbidden relationship could destroy everything—or be the key to saving it.

As secrets unravel and loyalties are tested, Paedyn must embrace her identity while staying one step ahead of those who want her dead. Meanwhile, Kai struggles with his role as enforcer prince and the impossible choices that come with loving someone the kingdom sees as an enemy.

With action, romance, political intrigue, and stakes higher than ever, this sequel pushes our characters to their limits.

My Review

Lauren Roberts came back SWINGING with this sequel, and I am HERE for it! 🔥

Reckless picks up after the intense ending of Powerless and somehow manages to raise the stakes even higher. This book is engaging from start to finish—I could NOT put it down. The action sequences are incredible, the character development is on point, and the romance continues to deliver that forbidden, angsty goodness we all crave. 😍

Let's talk about what makes this sequel work so well: the pacing is mainly consistent and keeps you hooked. Roberts knows how to balance intense action scenes with quieter character moments, political intrigue with romance, and world-building with plot advancement. Every chapter feels purposeful and moves the story forward in meaningful ways.

Paedyn's character growth continues to be phenomenal. She's not just surviving anymore—she's learning to fight back, to embrace who she is, and to navigate the deadly politics of Ilya with increasing confidence. Watching her come into her own power (or lack thereof, which makes her even more badass) is incredibly satisfying. 💪

Kai remains the perfect morally gray love interest. His internal conflict between duty and love, between what he's been raised to believe and what he knows is right, creates such compelling tension throughout. The way Roberts writes their relationship—the push and pull, the danger, the impossible choices—is chef's kiss. 😘

The world-building expands beautifully in this book. We get to see more of Ilya, understand the political landscape better, and discover new layers to the magic system. Everything feels richer and more complex than in the first book.

Now, I do have one minor complaint: there were a few tiny boring scenes scattered throughout. 📖 Nothing major, just occasional moments where the pacing dipped slightly and I found my attention wandering. These were brief and didn't significantly impact my overall enjoyment, but they kept this from being a perfect 5-star read for me.

BUT THAT ENDING THOUGH. 😱

(back into my positive rant)

That cliffhanger was EPIC. I'm talking jaw-dropping, book-throwing (gently!), immediately-need-the-next-book levels of epic. Roberts knows EXACTLY how to twist that knife and leave you desperate for more. I literally gasped out loud and then sat there in shocked silence processing what just happened.

The action sequences throughout are incredibly well-written—intense, visceral, and easy to follow even during chaotic scenes. The stakes feel real and dangerous, and I genuinely worried about the characters multiple times.

This is everything a sequel should be: it builds on what worked in the first book, deepens the character relationships, expands the world, and sets up even bigger conflicts for the next installment. If you loved Powerless, you absolutely need to read Reckless. 🏃‍♀️💨

4.5/5 pawprints 🐾🐾🐾🐾 (should I round it up to five?)

You can find the book on Goodreads here!

Who I think this book is for: Fans of Powerless (obviously!), readers who love forbidden romance with high stakes, anyone who enjoys action-packed fantasy with political intrigue, and people who don't mind devastating cliffhangers.

Reading order reminder: You MUST read Powerless first—this won't work as a standalone and will spoil major plot points from book 1!

Content warnings: Violence, war themes, intense action sequences, that DEVASTATING cliffhanger

Cheers, and happy reading (then crying over that ending)!
