Book Review: The Heart of Betrayal by Mary E. Pearson (Book 2 of The Remnant Chronicles)

Blurb for the book (on Goodreads):

Held captive in the barbarian kingdom of Venda, Lia and Rafe have little chance of escape . . . and even less of being together.

Desperate to save her life, Lia’s erstwhile assassin, Kaden, has told the Vendan Komisar that she has a magical gift, and the Komisar's interest in Lia is greater than either Kaden or Lia foresaw.

Meanwhile, the foundations of Lia's deeply-held beliefs are crumbling beneath her. Nothing is straightforward: there's Rafe, who lied to her, but has sacrificed his freedom to protect her; Kaden, who meant to assassinate her but has now saved her life; and the Vendans, whom she always believed to be barbarians but whom she now realizes are people who have been terribly brutalized by the kingdoms of Dalbreck and Morrighan. Wrestling with her upbringing, her gift, and her very sense of self, Lia will have to make powerful choices that affect her country, her people . . . and her own destiny.

My Review

After being disappointed by The Kiss of Deception, I hoped The Heart of Betrayal would improve things. Unfortunately, this was even WORSE. 😕📚

Let me be blunt: this book was really, REALLY boring. 😴 So boring that I found myself skimming pages, and I NEVER skim. I'm the kind of reader who reads every word, even when books are slow. But this one? I couldn't force myself to fully engage because nothing was happening! 💤

Here's the fundamental problem: the entire book revolves around the SAME SUBPROBLEM for hundreds of pages. 🔄 Lia is captive in Venda, trying to prove her worth to the Komizar and survive, while also trying to think of an escape plan. That's it. That's the whole middle of the book. Over and over and over again, the same situation with minimal progression.

Sure, there are tiny things that happen along the way to briefly boost the story—a small revelation here, a tense moment there—but they never last long enough to create sustained interest. It's like the plot takes one baby step forward, then stands still for fifty pages, then takes another baby step. It's EXHAUSTING. 😤⏰

The pacing is abysmal. Nothing actually happens until the last two chapters. 📖 The entire book is just setup, circling around the same situation, waiting for something to finally move the plot forward. And when things finally DO happen in those last chapters, it feels rushed and unearned because we've spent so long going nowhere.

The book is also super confusing. 🤔 Between the Vendan politics, the various allegiances, what's real versus what's deception, and the vague hints about Lia's powers, I spent most of the time not entirely sure what was happening or why it mattered. Pearson doesn't clarify things so much as add more layers of confusion on top of existing confusion.

The love triangle drama continues, but at this point, I'm too bored to care. 📐 Lia is still caught between Rafe and Kaden, making the same internal debates she was making in book one. It's repetitive and doesn't add anything new or interesting to her character or their relationships.

The setting of Venda should have been interesting, we're finally in the "barbarian" kingdom that was built up as this scary place. But instead of exploring it in compelling ways, we just...sit in it. Lia walks around, talks to people, plays chess, survives another day. Repeat. 🏰

I kept waiting for a turning point, for something significant to happen that would justify all the slow buildup. But it never came, at least not until those final chapters, and by then I was too checked out to appreciate it. 😔

The characters don't develop in meaningful ways. Lia is still making the same types of choices, Rafe is still the same, Kaden is still conflicted in the exact same way. Everyone feels stuck in their book one characterizations without growth or evolution. 🎭

For a book that's supposed to be full of political intrigue and danger, it sure spends a lot of time feeling stagnant. The "intrigue" mostly consists of Lia overhearing things or being suspicious of people, but nothing comes of it for ages. The "danger" is mentioned but rarely feels immediate or compelling. ⚠️

I'm genuinely frustrated because this series had potential! The premise was interesting, even if book one had issues. But this sequel takes all the problems from the first book, the slow pacing, the overwhelming love triangle, the confusion, and somehow makes them WORSE by having even less happen. 💔

The fact that I was skimming pages is telling. When a book loses me to the point where I'm just trying to get through it rather than enjoying the reading experience, that's a big problem. And this book lost me early and never got me back. 📚💨

If you struggled with The Kiss of Deception, don't expect things to improve here. If you loved the first book, you might enjoy this one more than I did, but be prepared for a very slow, repetitive middle installment that doesn't pay off until the very end. 😕

2/5 pawprints 🐾🐾

You can find the book on Goodreads here!

Who I think this book is for: Die-hard fans of the series who are committed to seeing it through regardless, readers with extremely high tolerance for slow pacing and repetitive situations, and people who don't mind skimming to get to the good parts.

Not recommended for: Anyone who values pacing and consistent plot movement, readers who get bored easily, people who struggled with book one (it doesn't get better), or anyone looking for an engaging middle installment.

Series note: I honestly don't know if I'll continue to book three. This series has tested my patience, and life's too short for books that make you skim. 🤷‍♀️

Cheers, and happy reading!
