Book Review: The Heart of Betrayal by Mary E. Pearson (Book 2 of The Remnant Chronicles)
by The Book Pup on May 15, 2026
Blurb for the book (on Goodreads):
Desperate to save her life, Lia’s erstwhile assassin, Kaden, has told the Vendan Komisar that she has a magical gift, and the Komisar's interest in Lia is greater than either Kaden or Lia foresaw.
Meanwhile, the foundations of Lia's deeply-held beliefs are crumbling beneath her. Nothing is straightforward: there's Rafe, who lied to her, but has sacrificed his freedom to protect her; Kaden, who meant to assassinate her but has now saved her life; and the Vendans, whom she always believed to be barbarians but whom she now realizes are people who have been terribly brutalized by the kingdoms of Dalbreck and Morrighan. Wrestling with her upbringing, her gift, and her very sense of self, Lia will have to make powerful choices that affect her country, her people . . . and her own destiny.
My Review
After being disappointed by The Kiss of Deception, I hoped The Heart of Betrayal would improve things. Unfortunately, this was even WORSE. 😕📚
The pacing is abysmal. Nothing actually happens until the last two chapters. 📖 The entire book is just setup, circling around the same situation, waiting for something to finally move the plot forward. And when things finally DO happen in those last chapters, it feels rushed and unearned because we've spent so long going nowhere.
The love triangle drama continues, but at this point, I'm too bored to care. 📐 Lia is still caught between Rafe and Kaden, making the same internal debates she was making in book one. It's repetitive and doesn't add anything new or interesting to her character or their relationships.
The setting of Venda should have been interesting, we're finally in the "barbarian" kingdom that was built up as this scary place. But instead of exploring it in compelling ways, we just...sit in it. Lia walks around, talks to people, plays chess, survives another day. Repeat. 🏰
The characters don't develop in meaningful ways. Lia is still making the same types of choices, Rafe is still the same, Kaden is still conflicted in the exact same way. Everyone feels stuck in their book one characterizations without growth or evolution. 🎭
I'm genuinely frustrated because this series had potential! The premise was interesting, even if book one had issues. But this sequel takes all the problems from the first book, the slow pacing, the overwhelming love triangle, the confusion, and somehow makes them WORSE by having even less happen. 💔
The fact that I was skimming pages is telling. When a book loses me to the point where I'm just trying to get through it rather than enjoying the reading experience, that's a big problem. And this book lost me early and never got me back. 📚💨

Who I think this book is for: Die-hard fans of the series who are committed to seeing it through regardless, readers with extremely high tolerance for slow pacing and repetitive situations, and people who don't mind skimming to get to the good parts.
Series note: I honestly don't know if I'll continue to book three. This series has tested my patience, and life's too short for books that make you skim. 🤷♀️
Cheers, and happy reading!
