Book Review: The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (Book 1 of The Naturals series)
by The Book Pup on March 6, 2026
My Summary:
But the Naturals program isn't what she expected. Living with other gifted teens—Michael the emotion reader, Dean the behavior analyst, Lia the lie detector, and Sloane the statistics genius—brings its own complications. And when a serial killer starts targeting people connected to Cassie, the cold cases suddenly become very, very personal.
To survive, Cassie and the Naturals will have to use their gifts to outsmart a killer who's always one step ahead.
Perfect for readers who love criminal profiling, Found Family dynamics, mystery thrillers, and teens with extraordinary abilities.
My Review
Content Warning: This book deals with serial killers and contains some disturbing content related to murder cases. If you're sensitive to graphic descriptions or true crime elements, keep this in mind! ⚠️
The hook at the beginning was what hooked me in. The first chapters grabbed me immediately, and Barnes does an excellent job of establishing Cassie's gift and the intriguing premise of the Naturals program. The concept of the FBI using teenagers with exceptional profiling abilities to solve cold cases is so creative and unique! 💡
I really enjoyed the Found Family dynamic developing among the teens. Cassie, Michael, Dean, Lia, and Sloane all have distinct personalities and gifts, and watching them work together (and sometimes against each other) was compelling. The relationships feel authentic, and you can see the foundation being laid for deeper connections as the series continues. 💕
The profiling aspects are fascinating! Barnes did her research, and the way the Naturals use their specific abilities to piece together clues and understand criminal behavior is really well done. If you're into criminal psychology or shows like Criminal Minds, you'll love this element. 🧠
Now, I'll be honest: some things were confusing as I was reading. 🤔 There were moments where I wasn't sure how certain pieces fit together or what specific clues meant. BUT—and this is important—everything made sense by the end! Barnes doesn't leave you hanging with confusion; she ties the threads together in a way that makes you go "OH, THAT'S why that happened!" The payoff is worth the temporary confusion. ✨
The content can get a little disturbing at times. 😬 We're dealing with ser!al k!llers, murd3r cases, and some genuinely dark subject matter. There are descriptions and details that are unsettling—but honestly, that's expected when you're reading about profiling violent cr!minals. It never felt gratuitous; it served the story. But if you're squeamish about true crime content or graphic descriptions of violence, you might struggle with some scenes.
The mystery itself is well-constructed and kept me engaged. I love trying to solve the case alongside the characters, and Barnes gives you enough clues to theorize without making it too obvious. The reveal was satisfying and set up really interesting threads for future books! 🎯
I'm ready for book 2! 🏃♀️💨 Barnes left me wanting more—more character development, more cases, more of the Naturals dynamic. This first book does exactly what it should: establishes a fascinating world, introduces compelling characters, delivers a solid mystery, and makes you desperate to continue the series.
4/5 pawprints 🐾🐾🐾🐾

Who I think this book is for: Fans of criminal profiling and mystery thrillers, readers who love Found Family dynamics, anyone who enjoys shows like Criminal Minds, and people who like teen protagonists with extraordinary abilities solving real cases.
Series note: This is book 1 of a series, and while the main mystery is resolved, character arcs and relationships continue across books. Definitely continue to book 2!
Cheers, and happy reading (then immediately grabbing book 2)!
